Stephen Livick donation

Ecotecture was recently the recipient of a generous donation from Richard Shapero of artworks executed by the celebrated artist Stephen Livick. In these images, from the Art & Nature series, entitled "Earth Fractals" Livick, a proud Canadian, truly demonstrates a unique and passionate eye for capturing a variety of extraordinary images using nature as his muse. In keeping with its mission to engage and educate the public with creative works of environmental art, Ecotecture will be disseminating these images to various public and private arts organizations for exhibition and research.

MORE ON STEPHEN LIVICK - Rather than striving to capture a transient moment on film, Livick's challenge is to present the permanent and enduring earth. Concerned with the plundering of the natural resources and our increasingly distant relationship with the land, he eschews the notion of ownership in favour of stewardship. Livick continues in the strong Canadian tradition of artists like Emily Carr and Lawren Harris who looked to not simply manifest the primacy and indelible imprint of the land, but also to reveal its essence. Carr noted that "artists have searched beneath the surface for the hidden thing that is felt rather than seen, the reality which underlies everything." For Harris as well, the challenge was not to reproduce what was before him, rather to go beyond appearance to a transcendental expression of the Oneness of the universe. Similarly Livick, revealing the immeasurable in the minute, doesn't just describe the land, he enacts it in all its space, quietness, and magnitude. It is a spirit both of and beyond the rocks, moss, and trees that he photographs; a sublime and universal life-force that underlies everything.
